The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is launching National Gardening Week 2023 on 1 May, for a week of gardening across the UK. Read on for some Coronation displays.
National Gardening Week (NGW) was first celebrated in 2012 to motivate everyone in the UK to get out into their garden. I am a well-motivated gardener, especially when it comes to dahlias!
In particular, the week raises awareness of the difference that gardening can make to everyone’s lives. A sentiment awfully close to my heart.
Besides, the dates coincide with the lead up to the coronation of King Charles III. The theme chosen is “Create your Coronation Container”

Let’s have some fun with Coronation displays
I thought it would be interesting to see what flowers I currently have in red, white, and blue. As a result, I moved some red tulip pots, and some white tulips into one area.
In addition, I grabbed some pots of grape hyacinth and forget-me-not for the blue contingent. In the background I have plenty of white comfrey, an absolute magnet for the bees. Besides, in the foreground, I have some lovely white daisies in the grass. Well it is a start for one of my Coronation displays!
Actually, I could use this aquilegia, but it’s in a border and cannot be moved.
The new pot plan is hatched
In order to have some red, white, and blue flowers in one pot I have hatched a new plan. The colour scheme does not have to be the colours of the union jack of course. However, I think it would be good to stick with these colours as the coronation is a major event, to say the least!
Also, it will be interesting to have a display in these colours, quite a change from my normal colour schemes in my pots and borders.
Most importantly, I would want my pot to be beneficial to pollinators.
Three contenders for the pot
Coronation displays pot sorted
I have all three of these flowers growing away merrily in my greenhouse so that’s a bonus. Soon they will be transferred to a large pot.
Furthermore, I have plenty of Dutch iris blue magic in the borders and cornflower blue boy as well. These could be a beautiful blue backdrop to the pot.
The Cosmos Queen enrols
Following on with my idea, I have mentioned the plan to my dear friend, The Cosmos Queen. The star of my posts Greatest benefits of becoming a gardener and The amazing benefits of gardening and she is very keen to join the fun and sort her own container.

The awesome power of the garden
I bet her pot will be full of red and white cosmos! Not sure what she will choose for the blue. I will report back on that. Or perhaps she will choose every colour under the sun for her Coronation displays.
For now, the first of my Coronation displays will be the red and white tulips with the grape hyacinths and forget-me-nots. I have a few blue pansies I can add as well to boost up the blue!
After moving these pots together, I spent quite some time watching the bees on the white comfrey. This plant is a bit of a thug, self seeds everywhere, but the bees love it so that’s absolutely fine with me!
Comfrey
It is so important to relax, look at your plants and flowers and watch the bees and butterflies. I thoroughly enjoyed my sit down in the sun. I learnt to relax, appreciate my flowers, and watch the bees and butterflies when suffering from stress and anxiety last year. My post Wonderful powers of a flower is the story of how some relaxing in my garden, as well as gardening, helped my recovery.
Following on with my new plan, there will be a new summer pot, a container of flowers lasting all summer. Furthermore, it will be a pot for the pollinators too.
Some final thoughts on Coronation displays
The Coronation container is definitely a bit of fun to create. More importantly, a chance to connect with others and share your creations. A huge benefit for our wellbeing.
National Gardening Week is a great idea, however, when I think of gardening, I think of all the gardeners across the world. International Gardening week!
With this in mind, I hope that wherever you live on planet earth, you can join in the fun and make some Coronation displays too.
We joined forces for the recent Earth Day, across the planet, so I am hoping this is another opportunity for us all to meet up again.
I have an Earth Day post Important, it’s Earth day 2023 if you want to take a look.
My grape hyacinths came from J Parker’s. See blow for link.
