Best new tulips, colourful spring has sprung

Image shows some of my new tulips in my garden

Now that spring has really sprung, it is time to share some of my best new tulips. I am also sharing some tulips that my dear friend, the lovely Cosmos Queen, has flowering in her garden.

Last year I had over two thousand new tulips in my garden. However, many of these were eaten over winter. Of course, this was very disheartening to lose so many, but I have hundreds of photos of them.

More new tulips were bought and were planted in pots. I decided to safely store them in Favolosa, the greenhouse, and brought them out into the garden just before they flowered.

Thinking of the beautiful tulips I lost, here are some of my previous tulip posts if you want to take a look.

Tulip time for a beautiful spring

More beautiful tulips, planting for the spring.

Well, onwards and upwards, with a look at some of the new tulips, bringing colour and pizzaz aplenty.

Best new tulips

Black Parrot

My first beautiful tulip is the swoon worthy Black Parrot.

A truly showstopping tulip, and one I shall never be without. Just look at that luscious deep purple black beauty in my photo. Surely worth a swoon or ten!

In addition to that glorious colour, the petals are twisted and fringed, adding to their charm.

They are in a large pot and look absolutely wonderful. Swoonworthy in fact!

I have found a new parrot tulip which looks as fabulous as my beauty above. One called Frozen Night, which has dark purple-maroon flowers with a frosted grey tone which open to revel its rich dark colour.

Goodness, there is clearly yet another one for my lists for autumn.

More tulips to store in Favolosa when they are potted up in November.

Another fabulous tulip

My next new tulip is the brilliant Pinocchio. A delightful tulip that opens out into a spectacularly large bloom in sunlight and closes up towards the evening.

Although these tulips are bright red and white, they fade into a lovely muted shade which I prefer.

As you can see in my photo above, they put on a fabulous display in a pot.

Furthermore, they are dwarf tulips so they are ideal for exposed sites where wind damage may be a problem. Perfect for rockeries, fronts of borders or growing in containers on a patio or balcony.

Also, the RHS has given this beauty an award of garden merit. Rather a prestigious award I am told, so well done little Pinocchio.

Best new tulips, Apeldoorn Elite

Another of the new tulips that I have this year is the stunning Apeldoorn Elite.

A Darwin Hybrid tulip which has single, cup-shaped flowers, with deep red in the centre, with broad orange tips.

I stop and stare at this one every time I go past. With the sun shining, the blooms look like they are lit from within.

These beauties have sturdy stems, so they are able to cope with blustery winds.

In addition, they are perennial so they are sure to come back every year. Unless, they are eaten of course!

Naturally, I shall need more of these to plant in late November, and they will be safely tucked away in Favolosa. Looks like I will have a greenhouse chock full of tulips this winter.

A new tulip for the Cosmos Queen

Next, we have one of the Cosmos Queen’s new tulips. This one is called Caribbean Parrot. A large flamboyant and frilly bloomer, if ever I saw one!

However, the Cosmos Queen was a little disappointed with the colour. She expected a little more orange, rather than the strident yellow. Although, as the blooms have aged, the red edge has become more pronounced, so the tulip is getting more colourful. And colourful is the watchword in the Cosmos Queen’s garden this year!

The description for this parrot normally includes the words, “a fiery orange-red edge, creating tropical, eye-catching flowers”.

Unfortunately, my Caribbean Parrot tulips were eaten, so I cannot tell what colour they would have looked in my garden.

Although, looking at the photos, I must say, that I would love this one to be a little more orange too.

One of my favourites is Amazing Parrot which has jolly impressive cherry pink flowers heavily flushed with that golden orange colour we both love.

I bet we both have more of those Amazing Parrot’s next year.

More Cosmos Queen tulips

Cosmos Queen’s best new tulips

Another photo of the Cosmos Queen’s new tulips. She decided that this year would be a year of every colour in her garden. In addition, a year of every colour planted together to create a zingy spectacle.

The above photo shows one of her pots, planted with orange, yellow and pink tulips.

Other pots nearby have purple, white, pink, red and a few Spring Green which are white and green.

I shall suggest a new parrot tulip called Rasta, when we next chat, which has a rainbow of colours in every bloom. Clearly, a tulip that would fit in jolly well with her rainbow plan of colours for her garden.

Likewise, Firewings might be a good option too. A zingy vibrant tulip with a clash of red and yellow. I grow this one and it certainly is a bright and colourful tulip indeed.

The tulip doll brigade

Next, we have the Cosmos Queen’s favourite new tulips. The fabulous Dolls Minuet and Purple Doll. Dolls Minuet is a fantastic and unusual lily-flowered tulip that boasts wonderfully bright magenta-red petals which are each flushed with a sleek green stripe.

She planted this one in a pot with some beautiful Purple Doll tulips which have the wonderful purple silky sheen, seen in the photo.

Another beautiful lily-flowered tulips would be Ballerina. A bright orange tulip with a lovely scent, which we both grow in our gardens.

Or, I did, until they got eaten! Thankfully the Cosmos Queen has plenty of Ballerina this year, so the fragrant orange is blooming away merrily for one of us.

Of course, I shall need more Ballerina too. I can see a pattern emerging here!

Tulips for pollinators

My final photo for this post is an Alison Bradley tulip which had almost finished blooming. Thankfully, I left the flower in place for a while longer before dead heading.

And therefore, I saw a lovely bumble bee on the bloom and got a quick photo.

Alison Bradley is a double tulip and not easy for the bees to reach the pollen and small amount of nectar available. However, access is easier as the flowers finish blooming.

These tulips are a fantastic rich and deep burgundy red before fading as they age, as seen above.

If you would like to see Alison Bradley in her rich burgundy dress, she features in the post below.

Fabulous blooms for a beautiful spring

Well, Alison B concludes the new tulips for this post, and it is time for me to do some weeding with my fabulous rescue hens and a black cat called Remus Nautilus. And to sow some more flower seeds of course!

Before I sign off, I would be interested to know of any new tulips you are growing and can recommend.

If you would like to know more about the history of tulips, I have added a link below to an interesting article by Sarah Raven.

I hope you have enjoyed this post and will join me next time. Ok chickens, and Remus Naut, here I come!

  1. Love all those tulips. Such lovely colours. I definitely need more Dolls and Parrots for next year. I googled Rasta. She is glorious. And so the wish list gets ever longer😂😂

    • Thank you for your comments. The Dolls and parrots are stunning, and well worth getting plenty more. Rasta is glorious, couldn’t agree more. Definitely on my list too 😁

Please leave a reply, that would be fabulous
